Mineral Tanning is the hide tanning method that emerged with shepherding and sheep tending, and it continues to be the most valued method for sheepskin rugs, even during our era of mass “chem-tanning.” Mineral Tanning creates a bright, white leather that is super plush, while the wool keep its natural colour.

During our courses, you’ll work alongside other amazing + fun tanners, of varying skill levels and ability.  This is an easy method for beginners to step into the transformative world of hide tanning and connect to one’s roots through craft.

Saturday July 31: Scraping + framing

Sunday August 1: Softening

Monday August 2: Combing finished sheepskin rugs

10:00am sharp to 3:30 +/- each day

Once you sign up, you will receive an automatic confirmation email.  A welcome email from Fern + Roe will be sent a week prior to the course.  This will contain a link to Covid-19 screening + the address and directions to the studio.

Please bring your own snacks, drinks, and an outdoor chair. Prepare for full days in the elements, likely in sunny and hot weather.
