Mezzaluna
Type of tool: Dry scraper and softener.
Use with: Any hide in a frame.
A round blade for working hides in a frame. This classic dry scraper goes by many styles. ‘Mezzaluna’ is Italian for “Half Moon.” It is defined by its handle shape, which both hands wrap around while holding the blade 90 degrees to the hide for scraping.
Keep the edge sharp when working dry hide; dull the edge if using the mezzaluna to ‘open’ stiffened or wet hides.
Tool use: This tool is much larger than the mini head knife and is often wielded with both hands. Unlike the artisan-forged dry scrapers, this mezzaluna is double-bevelled. This means you can use it in any direction, back and forth, without worrying about where the bevel is facing. It is also easier to sharpen and can be run through a standard kitchen knife sharpening device.
Stainless steel and rubber handle.
6.5″ long x 5″ wide x 1″ thick.
